(Equus caballus) A large, solid-hoofed, herbivorous mammal domesticated by man since a prehistoric period. Used as a beast of burden , or draft animal, or for riding. Sometimes used to pull canal boats. Were more likely to be used for the packet boats which were lighter and traveled more quickly than the slower freight boats. Some canal boat captains advertised “Cleveland to Portsmouth, 309 miles, in only 80 hours”
