Malvin, John

1795-1880. Afro-American who came to Cleveland in the early 1800’s. He conquered racial bias when he became a charter member of an otherwise all white Baptist church. He won white volunteers to the Underground Railroad and established a school for black children when it appeared they might be excluded from regular school. He also became a canal boat captain on the Ohio & Erie Canal in l841. He was the only Black canal boat captain in the United States.
