Old Betsy

Canal slang for a jug of whiskey. According to Pearl Nye “once back at Lock 15 a man got too ‘heavy’ at the bar, and taking a jug of whiskey under his arm, walked out the door of Mustill’s and straight into the lock. He held tight to the jug and was fished out. When he came to on dry land, the first thing he yelled was, ‘where’s Betsy?’ He felt much better when he found it was still under his arm.
